An ultra immersive experience
Within the range of monitors with a 1000R curvature designed by Samsung and launched in 2020, the Samsung Odyssey G9 stands out as a “monster”, as the brand has visibly had delusions of grandeur. We are therefore entitled to a QLED Super Ultrawide (DWQHD) panel, i.e. a definition of 5,120 × 1,440 pixels corresponding to a ratio of 32:9, as well as a diagonal of 48.8 inches. Needless to say, this monitor is impressive. Above all, it offers a very large work and play surface: to put it simply, it’s as if we had placed two 27-inch QHD (2560 × 1440 pixels) screens side by side. In gaming, the 32:9 format has serious advantages, such as offering an excellent feeling of space on titles like FIFA, where you want to be able to place beautiful deep passes. Too bad all the same for the viewing angles of the VA panel, which are much lower than those of IPS panels.
In addition to its disproportionate size and definition, the Samsung Odyssey G9 also offers this famous 1000R curvature, which gives the user a surprising panoramic sensation and above all a strong impression of depth in play. Enough to enjoy an ultra immersive experience, both the display covers almost our entire field of vision.
A monitor that takes up space
But before you can benefit from these many qualities, you must have a sufficiently large and deep desk. Yes, the Samsung Odyssey G9 takes up space. The monitor and its support measure almost 42 cm in depth, with the stand occupying almost 80 cm in width. Please note, however, that wall mounting remains possible thanks to the VESA 100×100 mm system.
Furthermore, for gaming use, the G9 requires a powerful configuration to run: for example, its refresh rate of 240 Hz is not accessible with all GPUs. In ideal conditions, you can indeed benefit from such a rate which bodes well for more than exemplary fluidity in the game and an absence of jerks. But on demanding titles, you will already be happy to reach more than 100 FPS. The Samsung Odyssey G9 also ensures responsiveness since its response rate does not exceed 1 ms. Activating AMD FreeSync Premium Pro is also possible on this monitor, a feature that allows us to avoid screen tearing, motion blur and other stutters that disrupt the game. Finally, the Samsung Odyssey G9 is not just for gamers. Workers and creatives can also benefit from it: they can first benefit from a considerable work space, particularly practical for video editing. The PBP (Picture-by-Picture) and PIP (Picture-in-Picture) functions are also available, which should delight multitaskers.
