No more volume buttons? The iPhone 17 could replace them with the Action button. Explanations
The Action button is an oddity. Since its introduction with the iPhone 15 Pro, it has been asking questions. If it theoretically replaces the old Ring/Silence switch by offering to assign the shortcut of your choice and therefore open up the field of possibilities, it very often ends up being assigned to Silence mode.
But then, why did Apple bother to integrate this button? And why after having worked to remove buttons from the iPhone for years, did the Apple brand end up adding a new one two years in a row with the introduction of the Camera button on the iPhone 16?
A rumor about the iPhone 17 (coming very early and therefore to be taken with a grain of salt) offers the beginning of an explanation. Apple plans to increase the capabilities of the Action button tenfold according to leaker Majin Bu.
Single Action button for sound
At one time, rumors suggested an iPhone without any buttons, which would rely entirely on capacitive surfaces. The camera button is an interesting example, a single surface allows you to press, swipe, double-click, all with very qualitative haptic feedback.

The leaker seems to suggest that said capacitive button could allow you to adjust the sound, switch from ringing mode to silence, and why not allow access to other functionalities, like the camera button which allows after a double click to move from one feature to another.
