iPhone 16: what is space photography?

This is one of the many new features introduced by the iPhone 16 series: space photography. If the happy owners of an iPhone 15 Pro or an iPhone 15 Pro Max could already record spatial videos, the Cupertino company has decided to extend the functionality to photos, but above all to all models in its new range. How to take a space photo? What is it for? We tell you everything!

A few days ago, Apple revealed its new iPhone 16 series to us. As usual, the Cupertino company pulled out all the stops, and presented all fans of the bitten apple four new models with striking features and design. Among the new features available across the entire iPhone 16 series, you may have noticed the arrival of space photography…

What is space photography?

If you are familiar with space video, you have probably already understood what the arrival of space photography on the new iPhone 16 allows you. If this is not the case, don’t panic, we’ll explain everything to you!

Just like spatial video, spatial photo mode allows you to capture an image in 3D. In short, it is an immersive snapshot format designed to be viewed on the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. When the spatial photo is observed through it, it immerses the user in this precious memory with a remarkable depth which would almost give him the feeling of reliving this very special moment.

Previously, only the two iPhone 15 Pro models included spatial video. Now, thanks to the improvement of the iPhone 16 cameras, all models in the new range (iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max) support both spatial photos and videos. As Apple explains, these are the main lens and the ultra-wide-angle lens which, when the device is held in landscape orientation (i.e. horizontally), allow photos and videos to be captured in Spatial Mode. This is also the reason why the Apple brand has revised the positioning of the dual sensor of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, aligned one under the other and no longer diagonally as has been the case since the iPhone 13.

A future update should also extend spatial photo to the iPhone 15 Pro, some users of beta 4 of iOS 18.1 have already been able to test the functionality.

For information, the iPhone 16 also includes spatial audio recording, which brings a new dimension to spatial videos. From now on, immersion is no longer only visual, it is also auditory for ever more realistic and poignant memories.
