Now, a screen, a battery or even the Face ID sensor from an old used iPhone to help repair an iPhone 15. It’s Apple who says it, and that’s all the better for fighting planned obsolescence.

Apple is still letting go a little more with its customers. If, for two years now, they have been able to repair their iPhone or other damaged device themselves using a repair kit, this undeniably had to be done with an official, new spare part otherwise they would lose the warranty. And this Thursday, Apple announced “expand the proposed repair options”.

Concretely, customers will no longer have to pay the full price to repair the screen of their iPhone or change its battery. They will be able to recover functional parts from an old iPhone to insert them into their current iPhone, while maintaining the device’s warranty. This was not possible until then.

“Over the past two years, Apple teams have innovated in product design and manufacturing to make repairs possible using used Apple parts, without compromising safety, security and privacy of users”rejoices John Ternus, vice president of hardware engineering at Apple.

These new repair options will be available from the fall, and will firstly concern the iPhone 15, which can thus be used to repair another phone or accommodate “foreign” parts.
