For several months and the first articles reporting his disappearance from the circuit, the craziest rumors had been circulating. In the disorder, she had fled Italy to escape “tax loopholes”, participated in vaccination fraud when Covid-19 arrived or had not paid six months of rent on a house which she rented in Calenzano, near Florence, while taking care to empty it of its furniture when leaving. Last Sunday, Camila Giorgi came out of silence for the show “Verissimo”, on Canale 5. And tell her truth.

“I did not disappear, contrary to everything that has been written. I’m sorry, but I’ve always been like that. I have often been accused of being enigmatic because I have never been a person who talks a lot, she told presenter Silvia Toffanin. For the taxman, my family and my father (editor’s note: Sergio Giorgi, who is also his trainer) were not aware because the problems came from outside people. We immediately replaced the people who were responsible for managing my interests and these issues.”

On the whispers about the house, Camila Giorgi notes that this is undoubtedly what amused him the most. “Especially because this house had no furniture,” she says. Regarding the fake vaccines allegedly made by her doctor, she will attend a hearing next month. “I didn’t know any of this. She told me that she had given me the anti-covid vaccine, she explains. This story shocks me because I thought we had a human and sincere relationship. This person has also treated me on several occasions.”

Now aged 32, Camila Giorgi says she woke up one morning in May with the irreversible desire to quit her career. This is the announcement she wanted to make at the last Roland-Garros but the media whirlwind disrupted her plans. “To tell the truth, I’ve wanted to make this choice for years. I love tennis and still have fun from time to time. But life on the circuit is very demanding, continues the Italian. I couldn’t stand traveling every week, packing my bags, always seeing the same people. I wanted to live another, different life.”

If she does not want to completely rule out a return one day, the one who was 26th at the WTA and quarter-finalist at Wimbledon 2018 does not believe in it. Because she no longer wants to “train six hours a day” to perform at the highest level, having been in the top 100 since 2012.

She now lives in Miami and is in love with an American. “I’m very happy and where I want to be,” she said. But I hope to come back to Italy often because it’s my home.” The Italian press is reassured to know that its Camila will return to the country as soon as possible.
