- American country singer, songwriter and actor Kris Kristofferson is dead.
- He died peacefully at his home on Maui, Hawaii, at the age of 88, his family said.
- Kristofferson was considered one of the most important songwriters of all time.
His songs have been sung by music legends such as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Joan Baez, Willie Nelson, Janis Joplin and Ray Charles. In 2004 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Kristofferson also enjoyed success in film and television.
“We are all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him for all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know that he is smiling down on all of us,” the family’s statement said.
Kristofferson was born in Brownsville, Texas, in 1936, the grandson of Swedish immigrants. At first he wanted to become a writer, but when success failed to materialize, he became a helicopter pilot in the US military and was stationed in Germany for a few years. Eventually he moved to the stronghold of country music, Nashville – and soon Kristofferson was on stage next to Bob Dylan and wrote one hit after another. This paved the way to becoming a celebrated music and film star.
