A 41-year-old Syrian was traveling in the north of Essen for around two hours, probably started two fires and broke into two vegetable shops in Katernberg before he was finally arrested. This graphic shows an overview of the crime scenes.

1st station – Major fire in Altenessen: Video shows dramatic rescue operation
The fire department received its first emergency call shortly after 5 p.m. There was a fire in an apartment building on the corner of Altenessener Strasse and Pielsticker Strasse. People were trapped and tried to save each other with ladders. The fire department had problems getting there, apparently because people had parked their cars in prohibited parking areas. There were a number of injured people, including two children aged two and four whose lives were in danger. This video shows the residents’ dramatic rescue operation.

2nd major fire on Zollvereinstrasse in Essen-Stoppenberg
There was another operation shortly afterwards on Zollvereinstrasse in Essen-Stoppenberg. Here too, according to the fire department, the fire was started in the entrance area of a house. There were a number of people injured with smoke inhalation.

According to current findings, the police assume that the perpetrator drove to Katernberg after the second arson on Zollvereinstrasse. There he drove the front of his car with full force into a vegetable shop at the corner of Katernberger Strasse and Meybuschhof. Then he put the car in reverse, drove through the windows of the shop again and then continued along Katernberger Strasse.

5. Police arrest Machetemann in a backyard in Essen
After about two hours, the spook is over: The 41-year-old is standing in a backyard in a warehouse between garden furniture, children’s bikes and a paddling pool and is initially pelted with objects by a few men. Cement buckets and iron rods are in use, there is loud shouting. A man holds a shovel like a baseball bat. The Syrian continues to hold the knife in one hand and the machete in the other hand; he falls down several times and gets up again. Finally the police come, loudly ask him to lie on the ground and finally arrest him.
