10 young Burundian handball players missing in Croatia during the Under-19 World Cup

Those who were to participate in a match against the Bahrain selection on Thursday did not show up on the field and are currently untraceable.

Ten young Burundian handball players who participated in the Under-19 World Championship in Croatia disappeared in the middle of the tournament, Croatian police said on Thursday (August 10th). “They are ten young men, born in 2006, who left yesterday (Wednesday) around 3.30 p.m. the premises of a university residence in Rijeka (west) and who left in an unknown direction“.

The police launched an operation “in order to find the missing persons and to establish the facts and circumstances of their disappearance“. The Croatian Handball Federation (HRS), organizer of the tournament, indicated that the Burundian players, who had already played several matches in the group stage, had disappeared the day before the match against the selection of Bahrain, which was to be played THURSDAY.

“We are in shock, both us as an association and the parents of our national team players, with whom we are in constant contact. We ask anyone who can help us find our boys to I don’t even know how we will get home without them,” said Dauphin Nikobamye, president of the Burundian Handball Federation, in remarks reported by the Croatian media “Index”.
