RB Leipzig, with Vandevoordt as holder, achieves a first success in C1

Leipzig hosted Sporting Portugal on Wednesday evening during the 7th day of the league phase of the Champions League. The German club won 2-1 against the Portuguese. Benjamin Sesko (19th, 1-0) and Yussuf Poulsen (78th, 2-1) scored for RB Leipzig while Viktor Gyökeres scored the Lisbon goal (75th, 1-1).

Already eliminated, Leipzig started with Loïs Openda in attack, but especially Maarten Vandevoordt in goal. For the Belgian goalkeeper, it was the first start in C1 with the Red Bull club and the second match of his career at this level. Arthur Vermeeren started on the bench, and came into the game in the 85th), while opposite Zeno Debast was started.

Still weaned from victory, the German club intended to take advantage of its last European match of the season at home to offer its public a first success. Leipzig therefore logically took matters in hand and opened the scoring in the 19th, Benjamin Sesko being perfectly served by David Raum (1-0). Conversely, Sporting Portugal struggled to develop its game and suffered in the match.

In the second half, the Germans were looking for a knockout, to take cover, but without success. Worse, it was even Debast and his teammates who were going to shake the nets, via the inevitable Viktor Gyökeres (75th, 1-1). A short-lived return to the scoreline as Yussuf Poulsen, replacing Openda on the hour mark, put RB Leipzig back in control three minutes later (78th, 2-1).
