The Sapiacou lock is the subject of restoration work since the end of August 2023 in Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne). The Sapiacou lock, quai Adolphe-Poult, was built in 1812 as part of making the Tarn navigable, then it was abandoned and closed to navigation in 1926. The Grand Montauban is mobilizing, almost a hundred years later , to preserve and put this work back into service.
Two phases for reconstruction
The reconstruction work on the lock is taking place in two phases : a premiere from the end of August to the end of December 2023; the second, started in September 2024, is still in progress.
The first stage allowed the drying and cleaning of the lock, the dismantling and identical reconstruction of the upstream stone walls, as well as the diagnosis of the structure via technical studies.
The second step consists of the recovery of the masonry of the two walls (side walls of the lock); the installation of the two doors and their control system; finally, the construction of an upstream and downstream mooring dock and the navigation channel.
-At the same time, the compliance of the Sapiac roadway by the rehabilitation of the fish pass, the installation of an eel pass and another for canoes and kayaks will complete the work to put this structure back into service.
The work should be completed by the end of the year. Total cost of this operation of scale and heritage for the territory: 8.5 million euros including tax(works and studies of the first phase: 1.6 million euros; works and studies of the second phase: 6.9 million euros).
