Doom, the 1993 shooter, can already be used on toasters, refrigerators, ATMs and more. Now PDF is becoming the most recent medium for playing Doom.
It’s long been a challenge for developers to see what support you can run the iconic shooter on, which explains why Doom has ‘ports’ on a bunch of different devices that don’t seem designed for it, like iPod Nano or smart watches.
It is now also possible to find a port to a PDF file on Github. Its author, ading2210, claims to have been inspired by another PDF port, that of the puzzle game Tetris, which has also been able to run on a PDF for some time now.
The quality of the image, presented in this video, is far from excellent, but it is recognizable to those who watched the original version. The author uses several text fields with a bunch of ASCII characters to display images on screen within the confines of a PDF file. An example of creativity, and yet another addition to the list: ‘Will it run Doom?’ More and more often, the answer appears to be ‘yes’.
