Big surprise in the Women’s French Cup: Olympique Lyonnais, ten times winner of the trophy, was eliminated in the round of 16 in Reims (0-0, 10 tab to 9).
It’s a big disappointment for OL women. This Sunday, the Lyonnaises were eliminated on penalties by Reims in the round of 16 of the Coupe de France. The 2018 Ballon d’Or Ada Hegerberg and German goalkeeper Laura Benkarth, eleventh shooter, missed their shot on goal.
At the end of an interminable session, where Reims defender Mathilde Kack also missed her attempt, the two teams managed to make the goalkeepers shoot. If Champenoise Kayza Massey succeeded in her shot on goal, the German international did not convert hers, shooting at her counterpart.
Last season, the ogre of women’s football lost in the semi-final against Fleury, also on penalties (0-0, 5 tab to 4). Paris Saint-Germain then beat Fleury in the final 1-0.
OL, French champions 17 times over the last 18 seasons, are leading the championship, five points ahead of Paris. The eight-time European champion club also finished top of their Champions League group with six wins from six matches.
