As has been the case for several years now, La Liga has decided to export the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia, with obviously a financial interest behind all this. This week, Barça will cross swords with Athletic Club while Real Madrid will face Mallorca. Last year, the Merengue won the grand final against the Blaugrana with a score of 4-1. A great success which above all allows us to fill the coffers, and this will continue this year.
12 million guaranteed
Today, the daily Mark takes stock of the revenues from this event which will be particularly to the advantage of the two Spanish behemoths. Indeed, whatever the result of the semi-finals, they will pocket at least 12 million euros (six million euros each) out of the 20 million distributed to the four teams. Recently, the president of the Athletic Club, Jon Iriarte, expressed his dissatisfaction on this subject: “When we think that something is not fair, we defend the interests of Athletic and if we let's do something, it's because we have hope that a fairer system can be achieved.” Also note that Gérard Piqué, via his company Kosmos, will receive four million euros for having put Saudi Arabia and the Spanish football federation in touch.
