Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has had to take a step back in his rehabilitation from a ruptured Achilles tendon, which casts a little more shadow on his future with the club.
Watson has played in just 19 games since signing a 100% guaranteed US$230 million contract with the Browns in 2022.
General manager Andrew Berry kicked off his review of the past season on Monday with this unexpected update on Watson’s condition. He said the Browns only learned of Watson’s medical setbacks during end-of-season meetings with players on Sunday.
Berry added that the team should get more information in the coming days. The Browns recently restructured Watson’s contract to take advantage of more wiggle room under the salary cap.
Watson was 1-6 this season before tearing his Achilles tendon in the Oct. 20 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He was one of the lowest rated quarterbacks in the NFL at the time. Last season, he suffered a right shoulder injury requiring surgery, which ended his season.
