The next edition of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled for February 1 to 28, 2025, will mark a turning point with a spectacular increase in prize money. The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, unveiled this historic initiative, highlighting the growing importance of the competition.
According to the official press release published by CAF, the bonus awarded to the winner of CHAN 2024 will be increased to 3.5 million US dollars (approximately 3.38 million euros), an impressive increase of 75%.
In addition, the overall prize money for the competition has also been increased, now reaching $10.4 million (approximately €10.05 million), representing an increase of 32%.
“We are very excited to host the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. This significant increase in bonuses reflects our commitment to the development of African football,” said CAF boss Patrice Motsepe.
Note that CHAN, reserved exclusively for players playing in their national championships, is seen by CAF as an essential platform for the development of local talents. Patrice Motsepe insisted on the role of this competition in the progression of African football on the international scene. “CHAN is crucial for revealing young talents and strengthening the competitiveness of African teams in international tournaments,” he said.
This revaluation could also convince certain countries to reconsider their participation. Algeria, which had announced its package in September 2024, would be contacted in particular by CAF, according to information reported by the local press.
