(Kansas City) The Chiefs found themselves stranded at the Kansas City airport due to an ice storm that forced a shutdown of operations, hours before their game against the Broncos on Sunday in Denver.

The Chiefs tried to advance their flight to avoid the storm, but the plane they were supposed to use was slow to arrive, and the team had to stick to its mid-afternoon departure.

The airport announced at 2:50 p.m. local time that all flight operations were halted due to “rapid accumulation of ice.”

As of this writing, it was unclear whether the Chiefs would be able to take off, with a break in the weather expected late this afternoon between freezing rain and a heavy snowfall forecast. in the evening until Sunday.

The Chiefs hope the airport will be able to de-ice the runways and resume operations before the first snow accumulations.

The Chiefs (15-1) have secured first place in the American Conference and a bye in the first round of the playoffs, so their final game of the season has no significance. It’s quite the opposite for the Broncos, who could advance to the playoffs with a victory.

Earlier this week, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced that he planned to give his quarterback Patrick Mahomes a day off and hand over the reins of the offensive unit to reserve Carson Wentz.
