Can we compare the reaction of Republicans to Joe Biden’s decision to offer this Saturday the prestigious “Presidential Medal of Freedom” to Hillary Clinton and George Soros, among other personalities, to that reserved by Democrats for the presentation of the same decoration by Donald Trump to Rush Limbaugh? In other words, is the anger inspired in one camp or the other by the honor given by a president to controversial figures justified or exaggerated?

In a message posted on X, House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized Biden for awarding honors this week to Clinton and Liz Cheney, two women “who lied to the American people and did everything ‘they could to try to bring down President Trump.’ Ajit Pai, former chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission during Trump’s first term as president, was ironic in congratulating Soros, a financier, philanthropist and major donor to various Democratic and progressive causes and candidates.

“He overcame a criminal conviction for insider trading [en ] and hundreds of millions of dollars in dark money donations to political organizations to obtain the highest civilian distinction in the United States,” he wrote on decoration of Soros.

For the record: New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called Trump’s decision to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Limbaugh, an ultra-conservative radio host, “truly nauseating.” “First of all, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is an extraordinarily sacred award. “It’s about putting someone on the same level as Rosa Parks, for example, in terms of their contribution to American progress,” she said on Instagram before adding: “Rush Limbaugh is a violent racist. »

A total of 19 people received the Presidential Medal of Freedom this Saturday. Here is the full list of those honored, including four posthumously: George Romney, Robert F. Kennedy, Ash Carter and Fannie Lou Hamer.
