The stay ofIlya Kovalchuk in Montreal was short, but memorable.
In 2018, the Thrashers’ 1st overall pick (2001) returned to the NHL, after six seasons in his native country. After being released by the Kings during the 2019-20 campaign, he agreed with the Canadiens in January 2020 on a low-risk contract which proved to be a good move on the part of Marc Bergevin.
In 22 games, the forward collected 6 goals and 7 assists for a total of 13 points, including an electrifying goal at the Bell Center to give his team the victory against the Maple Leafs in overtime. Less than two months after arriving in Montreal, he was traded to the Capitals for a 3rd round pick.
Moreover, during a recent interview published on Youtube the former CH returned to his time in La Belle Province. He spoke in particular of the pressure that players feel in such a large hockey market, particularly the younger ones, who, according to him, are targeted by the media.
Sometimes it’s very difficult for the young players there. There is a lot of pressure. In Montreal, the media can refer young people to the school club.

Kovalchuk, however, continues by explaining that he loved his time in Montreal, especially thanks to the unparalleled atmosphere of the Bell Center.
Honestly, I think Montreal was one of the best periods of my career.
