An unexpected adaptation
Who would have thought that a game as short as The Exit 8 would get a film adaptation? This horror game, which plunges the player into an endless underground passage in search of exit 8, nevertheless seduced with its oppressive atmosphere. And the surprise is all the greater because the film will be produced by Toho, the legendary studio behind Godzilla!
According to a translation by GamesRadar, Kotake Create, the creator of Exit 8, shared a statement on the film’s official website, expressing shock and gratitude at the announcement of the live-action film adaptation. He particularly emphasized that he would never have thought, when the game was released at the end of November 2023, that a film adaptation would be announced about a year later.
When I was offered to make this film, I wondered how to make a film about a game without a story, but I think it will be interesting as a film without destroying the worldview and atmosphere of Exit 8! I also visited the filming location, and it was really amazing to see this underground passage and this uncle in front of me! We hope you look forward to it! I’m also looking forward to the release!
The Exit 8, the game
For those who don’t know the basic game, the principle of The Exit 8 is very rudimentary: the player must advance in a subway corridor and find exit number 8. However, the environment is not stable. Subtle anomalies appear with each pass. The player must carefully observe his surroundings and detect these changes. If an anomaly is spotted, you must turn around. If no anomaly is present, you must continue. The objective is to reach exit 8 without making a mistake.
These anomalies can be varied: changes in lighting, displaced objects, ghostly apparitions, strange noises, or even architectural modifications. The subtlety of these changes is the key to horror. The player is constantly on alert, scrutinizing every detail, which creates palpable tension.
The atmosphere of The Exit 8 is its main asset. The environment, inspired by Japanese subway stations, is realistic and detailed. The pale fluorescent lighting, constant background noise and the absence of music contribute to creating a claustrophobic and distressing atmosphere. The player feels trapped in this liminal space, without direction and constantly on the alert.
The Exit 8 is also available on PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch.
