Ukrainian robots on the front line: a worrying feat

The Ukrainian army carried out an unprecedented offensive in Kharkiv, relying solely on drones and ground robots. An impressive technological advance, but which reveals a serious shortage of soldiers.

Ukraine has just taken a historic step in the robotization of war. Recently, the 13th Kharti Operational Assignment Brigade carried out an attack on Russian positions without deploying a single soldier. Combining aerial surveillance drones, minelayers, land suicide bombers and robots equipped with heavy machine guns, this 100% automated offensive is a world first.

“We are talking about dozens of robotic and unmanned equipment deployed simultaneously on a small section of the front”

A spokesperson for the 13th brigade quoted by Forbes.

A bitter victory for the Ukrainian army

But behind this technological feat lies a worrying reality. According to Forbesthis attack is not a strategic choice, but a necessity imposed by the lack of soldiers.

At Hlyboke, the 13th brigade, with 2,000 men, faced four Russian regiments, or 6,000 soldiers. This balance of power of 1 against 3, constant on the front line, makes lasting control of the conquered positions impossible.

If Ukrainian robots make it possible to temporarily compensate for this gap, their limits are quickly reached. In fact, the machines are poorly suited to the continuous defense of the terrain. Without human reinforcement, the gains obtained therefore quickly disappear.

“Holding ground is a tedious and grueling task that requires constant vigilance, which is difficult when a human operator remotely observes the battlefield through the sensors of a maintenance-intensive ground robot. The machines break down and their radio data links are very sensitive to enemy jamming.”

Forbes magazine, cited by Slate.

This spectacular offensive therefore illustrates both Ukraine’s capacity to innovate and its vulnerability in the face of an ever-increasing Russian army. For the moment, robots are not the miracle solution. (max)
