Five-point games: MacKinnon is good, but the record is unattainable

With his most recent five-point game, Nathan MacKinnon moved into the top 20 of all time, but the record held by Wayne Gretzky is simply unbeatable.

With a goal and four assists against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night, the Colorado Avalanche forward scored a ninth career haul of five or more points. This is even the third time that he has achieved this in 2024.

It is no surprise that we notice that only one active player is ahead of MacKinnon in this regard: Connor McDavid. The Edmonton Oilers captain has 11 games of five points or more on his record.

However, the mark to beat may well never be beaten. Gretzky achieved this feat of arms 96 times during his illustrious career. He amassed 191 goals and 520 points along the way.

Mario Lemieux follows the Wonder with 51 five-point games. Very far behind, Phil Esposito completes the top 3 with 19.

MacKinnon and McDavid thus have chances of approaching the big guys, but it would be very surprising to see them approach Lemieux and Gretzky.
