Kenya risks losing its host country status

Scheduled for February 1 to 28, 2025, the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) could experience a change in its organization. While Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have been earmarked to co-host the competition, delays in Kenyan infrastructure are jeopardizing the country’s participation as co-host.

A recent inspection by the Confederation of African (CAF) has highlighted worrying delays in the construction and renovation of infrastructure in Kenya. The Kasarani International Stadium, one of the main venues, is 71% complete, while the Nyayo National Stadium, also intended to host matches, is only 10% complete. These figures are well below the expectations of CAF, which requires full delivery of infrastructure before December 31, 2024.

Faced with this situation, Rwanda is being mentioned as an alternative to join Uganda and Tanzania in organizing the event. This possibility comes in a context where Kenya is required to accelerate the work or risk being excluded from the organization. The Kenyan Ministry of Sports and the Kenya Football Federation are expected next week to present a detailed inventory of the work in progress. With time running out, Kenya’s fate in hosting CHAN 2024 will depend on its ability to meet CAF’s stringent requirements.
