Oscar Piastri (McLaren-Mercedes) achieved the best time in the 3rd free practice session of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, 24th and final round of the Formula 1 World Championship, Saturday on the Yas Marina circuit (5.281 km ) in Abu Dhabi. The Australian beat two Britons, his teammate Lando Norris and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), by three and five tenths of a second respectively. The reigning Dutch quadruple world champion Max Verstappen, only 17th in the second practice session on Friday, recovered well by taking fourth place, ahead of the Ferrari of Spaniard Carlos Sainz. Monegasque Charles Leclerc, at the wheel of the second red single-seater, could not do better than ninth, which does not bode well for the Scuderia in view of qualifying and the fight for the constructors’ title.
The Briton George Russell (Mercedes) is in sixth place, ahead of the two Haas of the German Nico Hülkenberg and the Dane Kevin Magnussen, while the Mexican Sergio Pérez, who is probably competing in his last GP with Red Bull, completes the Top 10. Alpine, which must defend its sixth place in the constructors’ standings this weekend against Haas, which it is ahead of by five points, achieved the 13th and 14th times with the Frenchman Pierre Gasly and Australian rookie Jack Doohan, who replaces Frenchman Esteban Ocon, ousted at the start of the week by the Franco-British team. The drivers now have an appointment with qualifying, which will be contested at night, from 6:00 p.m. local (3:00 p.m. French).
