Google and the French daily press renew the agreement on neighboring rights

An agreement on rights related to copyright, covering more than 300 national, regional and local daily press titles in , has been renewed between Google and the General Information Press Alliance (APIG) announced, Tuesday January 14, the two entities.

The previous agreement dates back to 2022. These rights related to copyright were established for digital platforms in 2019 by a European directive. They allow newspapers, magazines or press agencies to be paid when their content is reused on the Internet by giants like Google, whose search engine displays press extracts in its results pages.

In “a tense economic context for press publishers, and while disinformation is becoming a major social and political issue, the continuation and deepening of the sharing of the value generated online by all the digital platforms concerned is essential”can we read in a common text.

Contribute to the financing of the press and journalism

This agreement, “fruit of a constructive dialogue”proves that “effective respect for the law can contribute to the financing of the press and journalism, and that cooperation between platforms and media is possible”declares in this press release Pierre Louette, president and CEO of the Les Echos-Le Parisien group and president of the alliance.

“It is now urgent that all digital players who use our content illegally also comply with their obligations in terms of related rights”continues this manager, with particular reference to X.

At the end of March 2024, the thorny issue of neighboring rights rebounded with a fine of 250 million euros imposed on Google by the Competition Authority. This criticized the American giant for not having respected some of the commitments made in June 2022 regarding neighboring rights. “We have better identified the basis of these rights” in the new agreement, Mr. Louette said Tuesday during the Médias en Seine festival in .

Alongside him, the general director of Google France, Sébastien Missoffe, stressed that his company had been a pioneer in the remuneration of neighboring rights. He welcomed” move forward “ and to define in the agreement a “sharing model in a clear, transparent and non-discriminatory manner” between press titles. No amount has been disclosed, in compliance with business law.
