Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel, double Olympic champion this summer in Paris, suffered fractures to a rib, right shoulder blade and right hand after a fall in training, his team Soudal-Quick Step announced on Tuesday . “Remco was transported to the Erasme hospital in Anderlecht shortly after the incident, where he underwent a first examination”explained the Belgian team in a press release. “He will now go to Herentals hospital, where, together with the medical staff of Soudal Quick-Step, his injuries will be assessed in more detail and his healing process will be decided (…)”.
Third in the last Tour de France, the 24-year-old Belgian could not have avoided the door of a Post Office vehicle while he was training on the outskirts of Brussels, which the Belgian Post Office confirmed to the Belgian media. “I only know that someone opened their door and Remco crashed into it”confirmed for his part Patrick Lefevere, the general manager of Soudal-Quick Step to the Belgian television channel Sporza.
Several violent falls since the start of his career
The three-time world champion has already suffered several violent falls since the start of his career. He suffered a fractured pelvis and lung damage in a fall during the 2020 Tour of Lombardy and more recently fractured his right collarbone at the Tour of the Basque Country last April.
In 2024, Remco Evenepoel raised his arms nine times, including a stage in the Tour de France and an unprecedented double in the Olympic Games since he won the time trial and the road race in Paris. In September he also won his second consecutive world title in the time trial.
