Fernando Alonso hopes that Lance Stroll will one day have the opportunity to change the way people perceive him, and that he will be able to prove the extent of his talent. The Aston Martin F1 driver regrets that his teammate did not benefit from cars fast enough to regularly show his abilities behind the wheel.
“I think the public gaze will always be harsher than it should be” declared the double world champion in Las Vegas. “This is the world we live in. He was winning in every category before he joined Formula 1.”
“He has had good and bad performances in Formula 1, like everyone else. The bad luck for him is that he has raced uncompetitive cars for 90% of his career, which is brutal for n ‘any driver.’
“We have seen many examples in the past that if you don’t have a competitive car, your stay in Formula 1 is very short. Our reserve driver, Stoffel [Vandoorne]is an example. He is a very talented driver who has won in Formula 3, in Formula 2, and who has won everything in karting.
“Then you get a non-competitive car and after two years you may not race in Formula 1 anymore. Lance has had non-competitive cars for many years and he is always happy to continue to commit and dream to one day have a competitive car.”
“It’s a bit of the mission that we all have at Aston Martin: to have a competitive car. I don’t know if I’ll enjoy it, because like I said, I won’t drive forever. But I hope that ‘He may one day have a competitive car and change the opinions of many, many people.’
Alonso praised the relationship he has with his teammate, and their personal and mutual involvement: “I think Lance is always very open, like I am with him. I’m in the last part of my career and I try to help him as much as possible because he will be the leader of the team soon. “
“I think this relationship has been very strong since day one. I have known Lance for many, many years. I also know Lawrence. Lance is also a part of the team. His loyalty and the way he works with the team can be -be a little different from those of the other teammates I’ve had in the past.”
“They could go somewhere else the following year or they were a little more reluctant to share things or work together in the future. Lance is part of the Aston Martin family, which makes it easier for everyone.”
