Sean Monahan agreed to a five-year, $27.5 million contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday.

The 29-year-old forward will join his good friend Johnny Gaudreau, with whom he spent nine seasons with the Calgary Flames.

“Sean Monahan is a very talented player and his addition strengthens our team at center and adds experience, leadership and versatility to our roster,” said general manager Don Waddell. “He can score goals and create chances, is very good in the faceoff circle and can play both the power play and the penalty kill. We are very excited to have him join the Blue Jackets.”

Monahan had 59 points (26 goals, 33 assists) in 83 regular-season games with the Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens. He notably recorded 24 points (13 goals, 11 assists) in 34 games after being acquired by the Jets in a trade with the Habs on Feb. 2.

Monahan then added an assist in five playoff games.

Selected by the Calgary Flames in the first round (6th) of the 2013 draft, Monahan has 538 points (244 goals, 294 assists) in 764 regular season games with the Jets, Canadiens and Flames, as well as 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 35 playoff games.
