The NAC was joined by Willem II yesterday (2-2). Carl Hoefkens couldn’t believe it.
After two defeats in a row, Carl Hoefkens’ NAC Breda was keen to raise its head on the field of Willem II, Peter Maes’ team. It seemed to be off to a good start: the visitors led 0-2 until the hour mark.
But the reduction in the score of the locals set the tone for an indecisive end to the match. And in the eighth minute of added time, Willem II forced a penalty, to equalize amid general jubilation.
The NAC aggrieved?
Hoefkens was in a more sullen mood: “It’s unbelievable that this penalty was awarded. It’s just a huge communication problem between the VAR and the referee. The main referee is making a decision too quickly.” he declares, in comments relayed by Voetbal International.
“We want to prepare the players to go to the next level. In England, in France, it doesn’t matter. These are championships where you are applauded for these kinds of duels. Here, the penalty is whistled. Bokila looked for contact, while Terence simply cleared the ball,” he complains.
But he also knows how to be self-critical: the NAC should have taken shelter much earlier. “We should have taken our chances to kill the game. From then on you know Willem II is going to throw balls into the box. We knew that was going to happen.”
With five points ahead of the red zone, the NAC still has a certain margin to maintain itself. Willem II, however, comes back up to par.
