And Maxim Van Gils disappointed crossed the line of the first stage of the Tour de France in Rimini on Saturday. The leader of the formation Lotto Dstny finished 5th, too far from his hopes. The Belgian had the goal of the Yellow, but, in the final, the peloton did not catch the duo Romain BardetFrank van den Broek, still in the lead. Yet the form was there according to Van Gilswho will try his luck again in Bologna this Sunday.

“I still believed that we would catch up with the escapees…”

“I had good legs today (Saturday), regret Maxim van Gils at his team’s microphone. It’s a bit of a shame because I could have sprinted for the win. It was very hot for the first three hours, which made the race difficult. I stayed alongside Victor (Campenaerts) for the last 90 kilometers. He was very good. At the top of San Marino I still believed that we would catch up with the escapees, I was ready for a sprint. There were a lot of fans but the atmosphere was relaxed, so it was nice. Tomorrow (Sunday) it will be punchier, I hope to have good legs.”
