With the last 16 approaching, UEFA are having to reduce their refereeing contingent for the competition. And according to the Sun, a first major decision has been made. UEFA have withdrawn Argentinian referee Facundo Tello and his VAR team following their controversial handling of the Scotland v Hungary match. Tello sparked controversy for a penalty that was not awarded to the Scots after Willi Orban fouled Stuart Armstrong, which angered Scotland manager Steve Clarke.

In addition, VAR Alejandro Hernandez did not intervene on two other incidents: the foul on Armstrong and Grant Hanley’s elbow on Endre Botka, which could have given Hungary a penalty. Six of the 19 refereeing teams were sent home, including Tello, his assistants Gabriel Chade and Ezequiel Brailovsky, and VAR Hernandez, due to these “major errors.” UEFA is expected to announce on Friday which refereeing teams will continue in the tournament.
