Euro 2024: The French referee

Euro 2024: The French referee

Two Spanish referees have been removed from Euro 2024 and will no longer referee any matches in the competition.

This certainly says a lot about Spanish refereeing. Its two representatives, Gil Manzano and Alejandro José Hernández Hernández, will not referee a single Euro 2024 match for the knockout stages, according to Relief.

It should be noted that the former will have only refereed one match in this competition and it was the match between France and Austria on the first day of the tournament. A match during which several disputes and errors could be noted on both sides, which undoubtedly cost Manzano’s non-renewal for the next stage.

As a reminder, Gil Manzano is not his first “controversy”. The Spanish referee whistled the end of the match on a final cross leading to Real Madrid’s goal against Valencia in the 99th minute of the match between the two teams last March, before sending off Jude Bellingham at the end of the match. La Liga immediately dismissed its referee for a few matches.

Manzano has no more friends on the FC Barcelona side where he had already excluded Neymar, Suarez and Messi and is also the only referee to have sent La Pulga off the field in his 778 matches with Barça.
