Mike Matheson has established himself in Montreal as a good offensive defenseman in the NHL.
He collected 34 points (injuries) and 62 points in his first two campaigns in a CH uniform and if he keeps the pace, he will finish the current season with a total of 56 points.
For a guy making $4.875 million per season, that’s pretty excellent.
Knowing that he is capable of producing and knowing that he does not cost much, there will certainly be teams who will contact Kent Hughes between now and next March to inquire about #8 .
And in the eyes of Frank Seravalli, CH may not have the choice to exchange him.
The informant believes that Kent Hughes could be tempted to liquidate him because the defender’s value will be at its maximum:
They (the Canadiens) may not have a choice given that his value will likely be at its highest by the deadline. – Frank Seravalli
Note that Matheson is part of a list (Daily Faceoff) of 15 players who could change address before deadline.
The CH defender occupies 9th position:
If Kent Hughes has an offer on the table that he can’t refuse… Perhaps the idea of trading his veteran could interest him.
But all that will also depend on David Savard’s situation, in my opinion.
We know that there will be interest in the right-handed defender and we know that he could bring in a lot of money for CH. But if Kent Hughes trades Matheson… He won’t trade Savard.
And if he trades Savard, Matheson will stay in town.
The CEO’s objective is to see his club progress and improve. On the other hand, this will not happen in the final stretch of the season if Matheson and Savard play elsewhere, because it takes AT LEAST a veteran to guide the blue line.
I like Kaiden Guhle and he seems to have great leadership qualities… But he’s not ready to play big brother right away because he lacks experience (128 career games in the NHL) and because he is only 22 years old.
Same thing for Xhekaj, Struble, Hutson, Barron, Mailloux… You understand what I mean.
In his article, Seravalli mentions that Kent Hughes might also be interested in the idea of keeping Matheson because the Canadian “doesn’t need” more draft picks.
For the informant, the CH needs help now… But at the same time, there is nothing that would prevent Kent Hughes from looking for choices for Matheson (if he really wants to trade him) and then flipper in order to acquire a player who can help quickly.
The Alex Romanov transaction is a good example of this.
We agree that nothing has been done yet because there is still a lot of hockey to be played before the NHL trade deadline.
On the other hand, seeing that Matheson’s name is suggested for a transaction while it is still November, it suggests that he already has a certain value on the market at the time of writing these lines.

– Nice.
– It’s not crazy.
– Seen the same.
– Hey boy. The reputation of the Edmonton Elks is at an all-time low…
