Having passed through the training centers of Standard and Manchester United, Marnick Vermijl is today a postman in Limburg. Quite a career change.
In July 2008, Marnick Vermijl, a young Belgian left-back, joined the training center of Standard de Liège, then Belgian champion. The native of Peer, in Limburg, had arrived from Bocholt.
Two seasons later, in March 2010, the young player, then just 18 years old, made his dream come true: joining the Manchester United training center. There, Marnick Vermijl rubs shoulders with legends such as Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.
In this completely new universe, at the highest level, the Belgian is unable to find his place. He played 70 matches with the Mancunian reserves and started with the first team in two EFL Cup matches, in 2012 and 2014, under the orders of Six Alex Fergusson. His first start, against Newcastle, is always described by him as the highlight of his career.
Formerly at Manchester United, now postman in Limburg
Loans to Sheffield Wednesday, Preston followed, an arrival in Maastricht then a return to Belgium, to Thes Sport. Since 2020, Marnick Vermijl has been on the lawns of D1 VFV. In the meantime, the defender has found a new full-time job: he is a postman.
“I had had enough of professional football. You are too dependent on the coach you have. Finding pleasure again was something very important for me,” he declared in the columns of Newspaperthis week. “As a postman, I have to get up at four o’clock every day, but now I’m home around noon and I can pick up the children from school. It’s a luxury.”
Eleven days ago, against Knokke, Vermijl passed the milestone of 100 matches with Thes Sport. This season, he participated in ten of the first eleven championship matches.
