“When we plan a curve, we slide on the wood like on water or powder. The best thing to do is to close your eyes and concentrate on the touch. It’s a kind of flow. And for the atmosphere, I put on David Bowie…” Laurent Golay imitates the hand gesture and closes his eyes. At his side, a stand-up paddle board made entirely of wood, fin and decompression valve cover included, has also kept the memory of David Bowie in its perfect curves. Even though it will probably never touch water – it is a collector’s item – its surface is as smooth as the mirror of the nearby Lac de Joux.

Perfection. Perseverance. Passion. Watchmaking precision, too, in this region where the goldsmith’s carpenter’s neighbors are Audemars Piguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Breguet and Blancpain. It is no coincidence that the Hôtel des Horlogers (owned by Audemars Piguet), a few steps from its workshop, is hosting an exhibition of unique pieces retracing the twenty-four years ofArt of Slide of Laurent Golay and LGS Board Manufacture, his company. “The art of sliding,” because “you slide while making and you slide while using,” he smiles.
