From the start of the 2024 F1 season, Aston Martin has not gotten off to a good start. Lagging behind the big top teams, the British team is struggling to get back into the battle to compete for podiums. Last year, at the same stage of the season, Fernando Alonso was in second place in the drivers’ championship. The Spaniard had managed to achieve no less than five top 3 finishes in the space of six races.
The car could easily hold its own against Ferrari and Mercedes. But today, this is no longer the case. At the Canadian Grand Prix, Lawrence Stroll’s team had the best race meeting so far, finishing in 6th and 7th place. Qualified 11th on Saturday in Barcelona, the Bull of Asturias crossed the line in 12th position, out of the points. A real frustration for the double world champion.
“I’m a little disappointed because we didn’t score points. We deserve not to score points because we didn’t have the pace throughout the weekend. In the race it was extremely difficult. When you slide so much in the corners, you also destroy the tires. So there are two problems: you don’t have the pace and you have a lot of degradation. Overall, the race was very long for us. .We have to improve.”
Results that are not up to par
Placed ninth in the championship with 41 points, Fernando Alonso is sounding the alarm. Outside the top 8, he saw his rivals flee without being able to react. Despite the recent improvements on the AMR24, the Spaniard still encounters difficulties when it comes to driving. A few days before the Austrian and British Grand Prix, the Bull of Asturias is fearful for the future.
“It’s frustrating, but we can’t do anything at the moment, so we start thinking about Austria from the checkered flag, and what we can do differently. But I think it’s going to be complicated there too, because there will be similar characteristics to Barcelona, with long corners. The weekend will still be difficult, like at Silverstone, no doubt. It’s time to work harder. talk less and perform more. That’s what we want to do.”
In view of the latest rumors about the recruitment of Adrian Newey, the British designer secretly visited the Aston Martin factory. The new infrastructure of the English team could attract him, in addition to the staggering salary proposed by Lawrence Stroll, owner of the team. A lot of work needs to be done before finding the leaders. Fernando Alonso is eager to see the new developments of his car.
“I’m impatient, but we’ve evolved the car a lot and we haven’t gotten the results we expected. It’s now about making sure that whatever car we bring to the track, it meets our expectations and that we become more and more efficient. As I said, we have to work hard, improve in each race, but without talking or promising too much.
