(Washington) John Tavares scored his ninth goal of the campaign, in overtime, to allow the Toronto Maple Leafs to win 4-3 over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

Tavares, who also collected an assist, found himself alone with goaltender Logan Thompson, whom he beat with a shot between the pads.
The Maple Leafs trailed 3-1 in the third period, but William Nylander and Mitch Marner, at six on four with 48 seconds left, pushed the game into overtime.
Joseph Woll made 24 saves, including his biggest against Alex Ovechkin in overtime. The Capitals captain found himself alone in the slot with the puck and fired a powerful slap shot, but Woll advanced far from his semi-circle to stop it and Tavares scored the winning goal on the same sequence .
Taylor Raddysh, Dylan Strome and Aliaksei Protas found the back of the net for the Capitals.
Logan Thompson, who stopped 31 shots, suffered his first loss of the campaign. He nevertheless remains undefeated in regulation time (7-0-1).

Simon Edvinsson scored in overtime to help the Detroit Red Wings defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2.
Jonatan Berggren and Patrick Kane, who added an assist on the game-winning goal, scored the other goals for the Red Wings, who ended a two-game losing streak.
Cam Talbot made 32 saves for his third victory in four starts.
Bryan Rust and Anthony Beauvillier responded for the Penguins, who lost a second game in a row.
Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 28 shots in the loss.
