Alpine, which will no longer use Renault engines, has announced that it will source engines and gearboxes from Mercedes from 2026.
Alpine’s future single-seaters will be half-German. The French Formula 1 team announced that it had concluded an agreement until at least 2030 with Mercedes-Benz, which will supply it with power units and gearboxes from 2026, the year of the next technical and regulatory revolution in the F1. According to the official F1 mediaAlpine’s British factory, based in Enstone, could take charge of the design of the gearbox from 2027.
Savings of 120 million euros per year
This communication comes a little over a month after the end of the collaboration with the Renault engine plant in Viry-Châtillon (Essonne) was made official. The cost of purchasing an engine from an external engine manufacturer being limited to 17 million euros, Renault management is counting on savings of around 120 million euros per year.
The group’s management informed staff representatives at the end of July of its wish to transform its Viry-Châtillon factory. His decision should affect more than 300 employees, but also many Alpine subcontractors. All employees concerned should be offered a position in other sectors of the group’s activities, the brand’s management indicated at the beginning of September.
With the double podium of Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon on the Interlagos circuit in São Paulo in Dantean conditions, Alpine is on the verge of saving the furniture. The team moved up to 6th place with 49 points, just ahead of Haas (46 pts) and RB (44 pts).
Under the patronage of Flavio Briatore, who returned as executive advisor, Alpine will therefore use a Renault engine for the last time during the 2025 season. This will take place with Pierre Gasly and the young Australian rookie Jack Doohan. Unless the latter, as suggested by rumors in the corridors, is replaced at the last moment by the Argentine revelation Franco Colapinto.
