Giampaolo has not coached since October 2022, when he was fired by Sampdoria who were then playing in the Italian elite.

It was with the Genoa club that he made a name for himself between 2016 and 2019, notably finishing 9th in the 2018-19 championship.

His results with Samp then convinced AC Milan to recruit him to succeed Gennaro Gattuso, but he only remained in post for seven matches from August to October, with a record of three wins and four defeats, which earned him the unflattering reputation as the worst coach in Milan history.
