Bryson DeChambeau won the US Open on Sunday at Pinehurst, after another cruel final for Rory McIlroy. The Northern Irishman indeed made a fatal bogey on the last hole.
After 72 holes and 4 days of competition on the Pinehurst trap course, with its numerous dome-shaped greens, everything came down to No. 18, where Rory McIlroy, deprived of a major for 10 years, experienced new disillusionment.
Excellent for 14 holes, the former world No. 1 took control before making 3 bogeys on the last 4 holes. On the 18th, he missed a putt by just over a meter that looked easy and would have sent the four-time major winner into a playoff against DeChambeau.
“Amazing”
Placed in the next part, DeChambeau conversely got out of 2 difficult situations on this final hole, to finally secure par and a success with a one-shot lead over McIlroy. The latter, already 2nd last year at the US Open, has 21 top-10 majors since his last victory.
“It’s incredible”commented DeChambeau, who pocketed a bonus of 4.3 million dollars, will move from 38th to 10th place in the world rankings, and is guaranteed to compete in the majors for 5 years.
