Arteal has a sense of timing, which is good when you get involved in sport. One month before the start of the Paris Games, the Lausanne house is organizing this Sunday, June 23, a online auction exceptional on the theme of the Olympic Games.

A theme that stands out

The date is chosen carefully, since it marks 130 years since the creation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by Baron Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937). And, to all honor, the founder of the Games of the modern era will be symbolically present thanks to the dedicated inaugural speech of the 1923 session! “For a house established in Lausanne, headquarters of the IOC, it was unthinkable not to mark the occasion,” smiles Capucine Clémendot, auctioneer.

Speech from the 1923 IOC session, signed by Pierre de Coubertin (250 – 300 francs).

No less than 135 lots were brought together around this theme. “We try when we can to put together a complete sale around a subject, as was the case in 2022 with Swatch watches,” she explains. For this, a first core of objects linked to the Olympic Games prompted Arteal to launch a call for contributions through a newsletter. “People responded really well,” she says. In three years of existence, the house has already built up a solid network of sellers and buyers, amateurs or professionals.

Among the highlights of this sale is the Olympic torch from the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, estimated between 2,000 and 3,000 francs. “There are collectors very interested in these emblems, particularly in the United States, where it happened that a torch, that of the Grenoble Olympics in 1968, reached 100,000 francs, during a sale in France, underlines Capucine Clémendot. Seniority obviously plays a role.”

The Swiss (but not only) will undoubtedly be numerous to be interested in an authentic Roger Federer jersey worn during the Doha tournament in 2021, and signed by the star, with certificate of authenticity (starting price: 2000 francs). If most of the lots are directly linked to the Olympic Games, a few are in fact exceptions, such as this box of three medals (bronze, silver, gold) from the World Athletics Championships in Barcelona in 1989.

But for the competitions placed under the sign of the five rings, let us point out a gold medal awarded for the ski jumping event during the Nagano games of 1998, as well as its sisters in bronze and silver, estimated between 3000 and 7000 francs. “There are also many old official badges, such as that of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympic Games in 1936, as well as participant medals, or badges from the various IOC sessions, which are still very sought after.”

Arteal well installed

The magic of online sales is to broaden the range of international participants, even for a young house like Arteal. As its sales are relayed by the Drouot site, collectors connect from everywhere, confirms Capucine Clémendot: “From Switzerland, but also from all over Europe, France and Belgium in the lead, from the United States, and, when we do a sale of Asian art, amateurs domiciled in Asia represent almost all of the bidders.

Lithographs

Also worth mentioning are more than 40 more artistic lots, taken from a limited edition portfolio (copy number 13 out of 250), under the sponsorship of the IOC for its centenary, in 1994. “It also celebrated the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the inauguration of the Olympic Museum in 1993,” explains Capucine Clémendot. Superb lithographs freely inspired by the Olympics, produced by artists from very different trends, from minimalist art to symbolism through comics.

For media enthusiasts, the eight copies of the “LA Times” with reports from the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, or more marginally, numerous postcards. “Several have the theme of boycotting the Games, whether Beijing in 2008 or Moscow in 1980,” specifies the auctioneer. We thought it would be interesting to integrate them, because it also reflects the history of the Olympics.”

The lots will be exhibited in the Arteal premises, at Flon, rue du Port-Franc 9, in Lausanne, from June 20 to 22. The sale takes place online and the first lots will begin to close on Sunday June 23 from 5 p.m.
