German police shot a man armed with a pickaxe and a Molotov cocktail this Sunday around 12:30 p.m. in a Hamburg street. This man threatened supporters and police officers gathered in the fan zone, a few hours before the kick-off of Poland-Netherlands (3 p.m.), first match of Group D (that of France), at Euro 2024.

The individual, neutralized, is seriously injured

According to German media, the police fired several times at this person who fell to the ground and was then able to be neutralized. Seriously injured, the individual was evacuated by ambulance to a hospital. The area was cordoned off by police.

According to Die Welt, which cites a police source, the man was leaving a bar and then brandished his pickaxe in a threatening manner in front of police officers. He was also armed with a Molotov cocktail. German police told many fans that the situation had returned to normal and invited them to head towards the stadium. Around 40,000 Dutch people gathered this Sunday morning in Hamburg for the “Oranje” march before the entry of the Netherlands selection into the Euro against Poland.
