The events took place this Saturday, November 9, around 9:30 a.m., at the Santo Espíritu del Monte monastery in Gilet, Valencia, Spain. During this attack, four priests were injured and treated by emergency services.

“We appreciate the expressions of support and solidarity received from various sectors of society and the Catholic community of Valencia,” said the Santo Espíritu del Monte monastery in Gilet in a press release, after the attack which took place this Saturday, November 9, in the morning.

According to El Pais, a man burst into the religious compound around 9:30 a.m. and attacked several priests present there. During the incident, the suspect allegedly shouted: “I am Jesus Christ” and was described by witnesses as being “fou”.

For the moment, his identity is still unknown, but he is believed to be between 30 and 40 years old.

Four injured priests

In all, seven priests live at the monastery, among them, four were injured by “a blunt object”according to the press release, and while the religious were in their rooms after having had breakfast.

Ultimately, it was Fray Ángel Ramón, one of the brothers of the monastery who managed to repel the attacker and alert the police.

Once there, emergency services treated a 76-year-old religious man with a head injury and the three others, aged 57, 66 and 95, suffered various traumas and bruises. Those who, fortunately, were not attacked were in a chapel and in the monastery garden.
