Dortmund: Terzic leaves his post as coach

Unhappy finalist in the Champions League against Real Madrid, Edin Terzic has decided to leave his post as coach of Borussia Dortmund.

The club of Zurich goalkeeper Gregor Kobel announced it in a press release on Thursday.

‘Dear Borussia fans, even though it hurts me extremely, I would like to tell you today that I have decided to leave BVB. It has been a huge honor to lead this great club to victory in the German Cup and recently in the Champions League final,’ Terzic was quoted as saying in the press release.

‘I asked directly after the Champions League final for an interview with management, because I had the feeling (…) that the upcoming new start had to be made with a new person on the bench,’ added the technician.

A Cup in 2021

After a first interim stint on the Dortmund bench during the second half of the 2020/21 season, crowned with a triumph in the German Cup final against RB Leipzig, Terzic then took charge of the team at summer 2022.

Under his command, BVB finished second in the Bundesliga at the end of a completely crazy 2022/23 season, losing the German championship title on goal difference in the 88th minute of the last day of the championship at Bayern Munich, winner of Cologne (2-1) when Dortmund could only draw against Mainz.

The club, however, missed its 2023/24 Bundesliga season, finishing only 5th with 27 points behind Bayer Leverkusen. But he reached the final of the Champions League, eliminating Atlético Madrid in the quarter-finals, PSG in the semi-finals and failing in the final against Real Madrid (2-0) at Wembley on June 1.

Sahin as successor

After the failed start to the season, Terzic saved his place on the Borussia bench shortly before Christmas. Dortmund management then appointed Nuri Sahin and Sven Bender as assistants for the second part of the season. According to the German press, it is Sahin who is expected to succeed Terzic on the bench.
