Inside the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games

From July 26 to August 11, 2024, hosted one of the most exceptional events in its history: the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. From the arrival of the Olympic Flame in to the final parade on the Champs -Elysées, the Ministry of the Interior and Overseas has had a constant priority: ensuring the safety of all!

The numbers speak for themselves: 14,900 athletes and para athletes, 206 nations involved, 40 competition sites to protect simultaneously, 6,000 journalists from all over the world, more than 13 million spectators in Paris and in the many cities that hosted the events, as far as French Polynesia, nearly 4 billion viewers… The Olympic and Paralympic Games of Paris 2024 constituted a sporting event of unprecedented scale.

Guaranteeing the security of the Games: a winning bet

This extraordinary event sparked collective enthusiasm and unforgettable moments of joy. Arrival of the Olympic Flame in Marseille, relay of the Olympic Flame and the Paralympic Flames, opening and closing ceremonies, events in the stadiums but also on many emblematic sites, Club France, final parade on the Champs-Elysées… Nothing would have been possible without the unfailing vigilance of the prefectures and the police, gendarmes and firefighters. mobilized for several months. Alongside spectators and athletes, they were present to secure the event, inform, guide, provide assistance : in a word, ensuring that this great sporting festival takes place optimally.

Forces mobilized throughout the territory

Paris Police Prefecture, Île-de-France prefectures, host prefectures, National Police, National Gendarmerie, Civil Security: for several months, all these entities have organized and planned the security measures which allowed, depending on the case, to enjoy this great sporting festival and/or to continue their daily activities.
The opening ceremony on July 26 was a challenge in itself. Indeed, it took place on the Seine, 6 kilometers between the Austerlitz and Iéna bridges. It brought together 200 heads of state and several thousand spectators for a magnificent spectacle. To ensure that this exceptional moment takes place in the best possible conditions, a major security system has been put in place: a traffic ban perimeter around the site, access controlled using QR codes, searches, etc.

Throughout the duration of the Games, around 30,000 police officers and gendarmes then ensured the safety of athletes and spectators, particularly in Île-de-France where the majority of events were organized. The efficiency of the intelligence services also made it possible to thwart several attacks.

The Ministry of the Interior and Overseas Territories are also high-level athletes and para athletes who train every day and have reached the podium during these Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Gold, bronze and silver, in teams or individually, they distinguished themselves in different disciplines : sabre, foil, judo, taekwondo, archery, pentathlon, swimming, surfing, para cycling, para rowing, para swimming… They carried the colors of the National Gendarmerie and the National Police high.
