FC Lugano have joined FC Zurich at the top of the Super League table. The team of coach Mattia Croci-Torti won 2-0 against a pale Yverdon on Sunday during the 13th day.
Solid, Lugano made the difference in the 36th minute with an action from nowhere concluded by the precious Renato Steffen. A slip from the middle by YS Mauro Rodriguez on a restart was perfectly exploited by Lugano in two passes, including a subtle deflection from Shkelqim Vladi for Steffen.
The Ticinese took cover in the 72nd minute, Ignacio Aliseda throwing himself to take a cross from Mattia Zanotti and score his 6th goal of the season. Four minutes earlier, Paul Bernardoni had repelled an acrobatic return from Hadj Mahmoud. The Yverdon goalkeeper also made a series of decisive saves after the 2-0.
Forced to a draw by Grasshopper on Thursday in Zurich, Lugano therefore perfectly exploited the poor performances of Zurich (0-0 against YB on Saturday) and Servette (1-0 defeat in Lausanne on Sunday). The Ticino will travel to Bern to face Young Boys next Sunday.
Lucerne returns to victory
The final match of the afternoon saw Lucerne win 2-0 against GC to end a run of four matches without a win. The FCL, which passed the shoulder thanks to goals from Winkler (8th) and Rrudhani (59th, from penalty), thus finds itself in 5th place just three lengths behind co-leaders Zurich and Lugano.
