The wild animals have finally been released. Scheduled for Saturday but postponed due to downpours, qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix was held on Sunday, November 3, on the rain-soaked Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo. At the end of an incredible scenario (there were five red flags, a record equaled in qualifying), Lando Norris (McLaren) took pole position ahead of the Briton George Russell (Mercedes), the Japanese Yuki Tsunoda (Racing Bull) and Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine). In the fight to win the world championship with Max Verstappen, the Briton, winner of the sprint race on Saturday, had nevertheless come close to elimination by taking the 15th and last qualifying place in Q1.
A second round which saw Max Verstappen eliminated. 12th with 50 seconds remaining in the session, the Red Bull driver was unable to improve his time due to a red flag, due to Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) going off the track. Sanctioned with a penalty of five places for having changed his engine, the Dutchman will therefore start from 17th place.
Like the Dutchman, other podium regulars lost big. While Lewis Hamilton was eliminated in Q1 and will start in 15th position, the winner of the last Grand Prix in Mexico, Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), went off the track in Q2, exploding the rear of his car and will be 13th on the grid. Liam Lawson and Alexander Albon (Williams), Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll (Aaston Martin) also lost control of their vehicles. For everyone, it's a time trial that involves repairing their car before the start of the race scheduled in less than four hours.
On the French side, the rain smiled on Esteban Ocon. Comfortable during each session, the Norman will start from 4th place, his best position since the start of the 2024 season. His teammate at Alpine, Pierre Gasly, experienced more complicated qualifying. The native of Rouen will start from 14th place, behind Sergio Perez (Red Bull) and Carlos Sainz.
