Patrick Mahomes believes attracting a WNBA team to Kansas City is the logical next step for the ownership group of the NWSL’s Kansas City Current.
“We want to bring basketball in general, and the WNBA. With the success the league has had this season and in previous ones, it’s a no-brainer,” said the Chiefs quarterback, who is one of the Current’s investors along with his wife Brittany.
“We see it when we talk about University of Kansas basketball and the Chiefs, the city of Kansas City is going to fill the amphitheater.
“It’s cool to have been able to get this women’s soccer team going to the playoffs and to see the support they’re getting. So let’s try to bring in a WNBA club as well with the same ownership group. They did well with the Current and I want to continue working with them for this next step. »
Mahomes also owns shares of the Royals (MLB) and Sporting (MLS).
“Kansas City is such an amazing place for me, it’s my home. I will live there for a very, very long time. So I think it’s important for me to get involved in this community as much as possible, and I love sports. I know how much the city loves sports. »
“KC is a wonderful city to continue this growth of the sport, but we will have to compete with other cities to prove that establishing a major franchise there is viable. »
Mahomes has also indicated that he wants to own a sports organization once his football career is over and his plan includes women’s sports.
“I am aware of everything that sport has offered me. When I’m done with football, I still want to be part of this environment. I also want to show my daughter that she can follow her dreams too. »
