An association representing large streaming platforms has succeeded in putting an end to thousands of illegal IPTV sites.

ACE, or Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment, is an association that regularly “seizes” (takes control) domain names linked to piracy and illegal IPTV, but apparently only reports a very small fraction of them. , if we are to believe the site specializing in piracy and IPTV activity, TorrentFreak.

This organization represents the interests of several big names in audiovisual broadcasting and streaming, including Netflix, Amazon, Canal+ and France Télévision. In total, around thirty different streaming services would be represented, located in a wide variety of countries ranging from the USA to Saudi Arabia.

Since 2017, around 1,500 domain names have been “seized”, and therefore cut, by the ACE. A figure difficult to estimate in the absence of an official list maintained by the organization. And this figure seems to be constantly accelerating since, since the start of the year, TorrentFreak estimates that 600 new sites display the ACE banner, indicating that it has taken control of a domain name …

To “seize” a domain name, the ACE generally uses a well-established method: warning pirates of the possible consequences in the event of more successful criminal proceedings. These generally tend, for fear of reprisals, to give in even before the ACE has to act accordingly (even if it regularly happens that pirates create a carbon copy of their website), as explained for example an article from Phonandroid in December 2023.

TorrentFreak speaks for example of the case of the domain name “XNET Ultimate”, which until recently proudly displayed its slogan “Why have cable television when you can have XNET Ultimate?” », but which now redirects to the MPA (Motion Picture Association) website. The MPA is a different association but similar to the ACE which represents the five largest Hollywood studios, as well as the Netflix platform. The MPA is intrinsically linked to the ACE in the process of combating illegal IPTV, and pirates who buckle under the pressure are usually asked to return their domain name to the association’s site in order to make amends.
