Bakel, Oct 14 (APS) – ASC Benfica won its seventh Bakel Mayor’s Cup trophy on Sunday by winning on penalties (5-4) against ASC Sanda.

After a goalless draw at the Bakel municipal stadium, ASC Benfica emerged victorious in the final, helped on penalties by their goalkeeper who stopped the third penalty for Sanda’s team.

ASC Benfica thus wins its seventh trophy of the said cup and puts an end to a drought of several years.

“I give thanks to Allah. Since 2015, ASC Benfica has not won the Mayor’s Cup. I congratulate my players and I encourage the opposing team,” said Ibrahima Biagui, the coach.

In addition to the trophy, the victorious team pockets a check for 3 million CFA francs against 1 million for the unfortunate finalist.

“By this gesture I wanted to support the youth of Bakel. This is part of a constant concern to innovate and put Bakel on the development ramp,” said the mayor of the commune of Bakel, Ibrahima Baba Sall.

He promised to increase the envelope to 5 million for the victorious team and 3 million for the defeated team during the next editions.

Ibrahima Baba Sall also inaugurated a gym equipped, according to him, with “equipment which “meets the standards of modern sport”.
