‘He didn’t mention any names’: Domenico Tedesco reflects on Kevin De Bruyne’s shock interview after France defeat

Kevin De Bruyne was not happy after the defeat against (2-0) in the Nations League on September 9. The captain of the Red Devils did not hesitate to let it be known at the final whistle.

After the defeat of the Red Devils against France, Kevin De Bruyne made very harsh remarks towards his teammates to our colleagues at VTM. “When you’re not good enough to make the top, you have to give it your all and I didn’t even see that. I can accept that we’re not as good as we were in 2018, I’m the first to say it, but I can’t tolerate the way we played tonight.(…) Some players did not complete their tasks”, he declared.

That same evening, our team on site also captured a discussion between Kevin De Bruyne and Franky Vercauteren. The captain appearing to say “ik stop”, (I stop).

So many fires that Domenico Tedesco had to put out this Friday at a press conference, after the announcement of the selection. The Italian-German first announced that ‘KDB’ had asked him to skip the October and November rallies to take care of his body, but also returned to his captain’s comments after the setback against France.

First of all, Kevin is a great player with personality. He’s our captain and he can speak to the team in a certain way. He did not mention any names. It’s good to see that he’s taking responsibility. It was a hot interview and Kevin is very emotional and wants to win. It got bigger because he was the one who spoke but it’s not a problem in the locker room. What if I agreed with his words? Yes, because we can always do better.

The others absent

Besides ‘KDB’, Romelu Lukaku is the other notable absentee from the Devils selection. “Romelu is in a bit of the same situation as Kevin. He plays in Naples but he doesn’t feel at his best yet. He also asked to work individually in his club. I hope he will be back for the month of November. The more he plays, the better he will be.

Tedesco also commented on the non-selections of Julien Duranville, Thomas Meunier, Arthur Vermeeren and Thomas Kaminski. “Duranville has a hamstring injury and Meunier also asked us to work individually in because of calf discomfort. Kaminski is out for personal reasons. For Arthur, we decided to give him minutes with the U21s. He’s playing a bit again at Leipzig but we think it’s the right decision to give him some rhythm with the hopefuls.
